| Extremadura Birding Centre : a rural cottage in a Special Area for Bird Protection |
![]() |
The selected accomodation is part of an intimate but large rural cottage in Extremadura, in a Special Area of Protection for Birds. It is a renovated farmhouse set in acres of private land, with a stunning lakeside, located between the Castle of Granadilla and the Roman city of Caparra. The cottage stands secluded in a scarcely populated area. Its lanscape is very representative of the Spanish Dehesa: a vast area of meadows with gently undulated landcapes and scattered with cork oaks or holm oaks and granite outcrops. This birdwatching centre is more than a comfortable lodging for visiting naturalists, it's also as a place where you have privileged observation places. Much to the delight of our family and groups visitors, interesting amenities like hides and stork nests have been built over the recent years. The cottage is composed of various independent houses with exposed stonewalls, where a maximum of 17 guests can be accomodated . A kitchen maid and full catering can be contracted upon request. Out of the birding season (from early spring to early summer), the farmhouse is organised as a self-catering accomodation, so you can always drop by if you manage to book shortly in advance. There are many places with spectacular scenery or historical background to visit nearby. The site is located within a stone’s throw from the Silver Route (Via de la Plata), where remains of World Heritage can be easily observed. Nearby destinations are El Valle del Jerte, Hervas, further north Bejar and most notably Salamanca (1 hour drive) and Avila (1h40 drive East). This is a a great base for touring the Extremenian cities - Plasencia, Caceres, Trujillo, Merida. This birding centre is a fantastic gateway for nature lovers looking for leisure activities like birdwatching along with other very different activities. Visitors can arrange many walks in the surrounding countryside, in a unspoilt nature with a wide variety of wildlife and cultural heritage (Via de la Plata) and year round opportunities for moutaineering or cycling. No wonder, our guests will enjoy a fantastic stay in this landscape of unique beauty. This place is one of the hidden secret of Extremadura. Our activities in brief: birdwatching and walking tours in Parque Nacional de Monfrague, Gredos mountain range and Valle del Jerte. The latter offers a unique an ephemeral all-white show when the cherry trees start blossoming each year around the 3rd or 4th week of March. We arrange guided city tours in Salamanca, Avila. We also offer culinary tours to discover the regional cuisine in the Sierra de Gata. You will definitely leave this region with a good overview of the local culinary specialities. Book your stay at the Birdwatching Centre. We hope to have you as our next guest. |
